Bottled vs tap

British consumers have long had a taste for bottled water, spending £1.68 billion (US$3.23 billion) on the stuff in 2006 alone. However, a 9% decrease in sales the following year may be indicative of a change in atitude.

Costing on average 141 times less than bottled, tap water should be an attractive alternative for consumers. So say Which?, the UK consumers assocation, who recently undertook some research on the topic.

Included in the findings:

  • UK tap water is among the safest in the world

  • 50% of participants in a blind taste test could not tell the difference between bottled and tap water.

  • Enough plastic bottles are sent to landfill in the UK every year to fill the entire national football stadium...twice!

  • Nearly 25% of those surveyed said they were consuming less bottled water than a year ago.
