Jo Witt, Trainee Development Officer at CI, attended the TACD 12th Annual Meeting in Brussels and gives a behind-the-scenes glimpse.
Four days of TransAtlantic Consumer Dialogue (TACD). We were greeted with fresh coffee on Sunday morning by Monique Goyens, Director of BEUC and TACD Steering Committee co-chair at the BEUC office. We had a delicious dinner in the "Scavelat", which cannot really be translated, but means something similar to "wonky spirit level".
BEUC then topped itself by hosting a dinner for all TACD participants at the Comic Mueseum, dining with Lucky Luke and TinTin, and also Julie Brill, the US Federal Trade Commissioner.
The meetings with the US and EU governments started with the arrival of William Kennard, the US Ambassador to the EU, with no less than three security guards. Later, John Dalli, European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Affairs, had to leave early to fly to Moscow to discuss the proposed Russian ban on EU food imports.
And finally Michel Barnier, European Commissioner for Internal Market and Services, spoke in French but an interpreter ensured that both sides of the Atlantic were able to follow his view on the protection of consumers in the financial services sector.
